Doesn't do anything. Can't be turned on. That prevents the fire from being used, because there is no other way of starting the fire.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This fireplace controller arrived safely and on testing was confirmed to be dead.

This was due to a SMD diode breaking away from the board.  This was replaced which restored full functionality.
