The handset battery contacts have corroded on one side.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This Electric fire remote control arrived safely from Wolverhampton and on inspecito nwas confiremd to have badly damaged battery terminals from a battery leak.

The terminals are not available as spares which meant a modification was carried out inside to fit a AAA twin battery holder (see image), full functionality was restored.
