After speaking to Martin Smith he seemed to think the cable was faulty.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This remote control arrived safely from Llandeilo and on inspection the cable was found to have open circuit cores (*2).  

A replacement straight cable was supplied (we cannot get the curly kind)

The remote was opened to check for further issues and the power button contacts were found to be worn, a replacement pad was glued into place.
