One of the battery terminals is missing (corrosion). The battery cover is also broken but if a replacement cannot be found no problem.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This Denon controller arrived safely from Italy and on testing was confirmed to be dead and have a damaged battery terminal.  The terminal was replaced which restored full functionality.
