Customer's Fault Description
Buttons were stuck, I dismantled and fixed that but after reassembly the remote no longer works.

This fireplace controller arrived safely and on testing was found to behave erratically.

On opening there was a large mass of contamination over the button array (see image).  This was all cleaned up and all 3 buttons replaced which restored normal functionality.
