only works when I am head to head with the reciever, when I distance myself, it stops working

 

This fireplace control arrived safely from Isreal.  On adding a power source and testing it was confirmed that a signal could only be found when the control was less than 1 inch away from a receiver.

This is a common issue that was resolved by replacing the ultrasonic transducer, full functionality was restored.
