Customer's Fault Description
None of the buttons work when pressed from the assembled remote control unit, but they usually work when pressed directly on the circuit board.
This garage door controller arrived safely and on opening the issue became clear. The battery compartment had broken away from the board on one side (see image). This was resoldered back into place and full functionality was restored.
