the remote appeared to be sending out a signal to the receiver without using any of the buttons and altering the gas valve all on its own. this arrangement has now changed whereby the up button on the handset works with LED indication on the reciever but the down button does not - no indication on the LED

 

This remote and receiver arrived safely and on testing was acting unusually on random occasions.  At first it appeared it was the buttons that was at faulty and both were replaced.  Then after testing the fault remained.  The actual reason was found to be a metal plate was found lose under the display.  This was removed and full constant functionality was restored.
