On/off works only occasionally, and sometimes not at all

 

This fireplace controller arrived safely from the Netherlands.  On testing the remote was confirmed not to be responding on any button press.

When opened the rubber conductive pads were found to be worn down making a high resistance on the contacts.

The contacts were cleaned up and replenished and full regular functionality was restored.
