Diet Coke dropped onto the remote control.

 

This DVD/surround sound system controller arrived safely and on testing was confirmed not to be transmitting on any button press.

On opening there was no immediate signs of a liquid spillage.  The board was given an alcohol bath to remove any possible contaminants but the issue remained.

A component test then revealed that the 3.64 resonator was at fault.  A replacement was fitted and full functionality was restored.
