it needs springs on the board to hold batteries in place.

 

This Denon BluRay controller arrived safely from the United States and on inspection 2 battery terminals were missing, on opening these were the terminals that connected direct to the PCB. 

Replacement terminals were soldered into place which restored full functionality.
