When the battery is inserted the light flashes and the device will not operate and if the battery is left in the control it goes flat

This Gas Fire remote controller arrived safely and on testing some buttons were sluggish / non responsive.

On opening there was some contamination shorting out one of the buttons (see image), this is the reason for it draining batteries.  All four buttons were replaced which restored normal functionality.
