i think its possibly a connection problem with the battery terminals, <br /> If i fiddle and move the batteries and hold them in place the remote works, when it was working all buttons were working as they should.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This motor move controller arrived safely and on testing was confirmed not to power up unless the PCB was flexed.

This was due to a break in the print near the battery block, this was reworked which restored full functionality.
