Suspect broken wire / loose connection / dry joint - only works when wires moved around.

This remote arrived safely and on inspection was found to have a broken internal wire at the remote end, this is a common issue cause by flexing over the years.  

The cable was cut back and resoldered back into place effectively bypassing the cable break.
