This Remote control for a Studio 2 8701CFLEC fireplace arrived safely and on testing was found to reset when either the up or down button was pressed.

There was sticky contamination over the PCB / button array.  The Buttons and battery cable were replaced and the PCB cleared of all contaminants but hte issue remained.

Unfortuantely it was eventually conluded that the issue is most likely with the main IC which is situated under the LCD.  This has rendered a repair not possible.

You should be able to get replacement remotes on ebay (the main distributers of mertik maxitrol products actually sell through ebay -  https://ebay.us/NGHe8E - the model number of hte remote has worn off the handset therefore it important to ensure the correct remote is obtained by using the model number of the receiver in the fireplace (not the fireplace model itself).  Please contact the sellers for further information.
