Customer's Fault Description
It's like the batteries leaked in the remote. The fireplace is in a spare sitting room so not used very often so only noticed the damage.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This fire control arrived safely from Ireland and on inspection the case was held together by a rubber band.

When opened it was found that one of the battery terminals was missing (see image)  This was replaced and when tested was found to have restored full functionality.
