Buttons suddenly stopped working. Oddly volume down now seems to perform the rewind function on the CD!

 

This Kenwood remote arrived and on inspection the back case of the control was cracked in half, luckily this hadnt cracked through the PCB.

on testing many buttons were not responding.  When opened the issue was found to be due to a sticky contamination over much of the PCB (see image), this was cleaned up using alcohol.  This restored full functionality to all buttons.

The back case was glued back together.
