Spring at one end of the remote battery compartment has corroded and fallen out, meaning that the batteries have no 'connection' when inserted.
Remote Fixer Repair Response

This velux remote arrived safely and on inspection was found to have a badly corroded battery terminal and was subsequently dead.

A replacement battery terminal was fitted which restored full functionality.
